Principal Engineer

Role Purpose:

The Principal Engineer is responsible for providing authoritative technical leadership and assurance across the design, assessment, and delivery of lifting systems in high-integrity sectors. The role ensures engineering
solutions are safe, compliant, and underpinned by first-principles engineering, while supporting us and our clients through expert guidance, governance, and project leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice on complex engineering aspects of lifting equipment, codes, standards, material properties, testing, and non-destructive examination.
  • Interpret and guide design compliance with LOLER, PUWER, CE Marking, and other regulatory frameworks.
  • Prepare and verify design calculations and technical reports with precision and clarity. A strong knowledge of First Principles is a must for this role
  • Conduct on-site technical assessments of lifting plant and equipment.
  • Develop into the role of Technical Authority (Cranes) within the IMES Governance System, supporting clients in becoming Intelligent Customers.
  • Support tendering, proposal development, and programme planning for new and existing clients.
  • Engage in technical discussions with stakeholders from commercial, nuclear, and defence sectors.
  • Act as a Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person (SQEP) for safety case and hazard identification assessments.
  • Lead and manage engineering projects from concept to completion.
  • Pursue continuous professional development aligned with company and industry standards.
Competence Requirements

  • Proven experience in mechanical engineering, especially in lifting and handling systems.
  • Significant experience with 3D CAD Modelling software, preferably Solidworks
  • Deep understanding of relevant legislation and standards (LOLER, PUWER, CE Marking).
  • Strong analytical skills and technical report writing capabilities.
  • Ability to manage projects and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to professional growth and technical leadership.
  • A strong knowledge of First Principles is a must for this role
